Strapped to the top of a specially designed 747, the space shuttle Atlantis has begun its journey back to Florida.
The orbiter took off from Edward's Air Force Base in California and will make an overnight stop in Texas before arriving at the Kennedy Space Centre on Tuesday evening.

The historic and successful Hubble Servicing Mission 4 concluded with a trouble-free Space Shuttle landing today. During a series of unprecedented spacewalks, astronauts replaced and repaired a total of four instruments.
The Wide Field Camera 3 and Cosmic Origins Spectrograph were installed and the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph were successfully repaired.
The remarkably successful Servicing Mission 4 - the fifth and final visit of the Space Shuttle to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope - came to an end with a picture-perfect landing at Edwards Air Force Base at 17:39 CEST today.

After 12 days, 21 hours and 37 minutes in flight, the shuttle, with its crew of seven astronauts, landed at this air base 100 miles north-east of Los Angeles.
Nasa had earlier cancelled landing efforts at Cape Canaveral in Florida, where weather conditions remained threatening after earlier storms.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its crew landed at 8:39 a.m. PDT Sunday at Edwards Air Force Base, California, completing the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Atlantis' astronauts conducted five successful spacewalks during their STS-125 flight to enhance and extend the life of the orbiting observatory.

The space shuttle Atlantis has landed in California, where it was diverted after continuing stormy weather prevented a Florida touchdown.
Atlantis landed at 1539 GMT at Edwards Air Force Base.
