Kintyre air base

It began life as a base for airships in 1918 before becoming a naval air station with maritime patrol aircraft.

Yesterday, uncertainty over RAF Machrihanish's future was finally removed when Defence Secretary Kevan Jones announced that the Kintyre base was "surplus to defence requirements and will be disposed of".
