The launch of NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory, or OCO, aboard a Taurus XL rocket is scheduled for Feb. 24. Liftoff from Space Launch Complex 576-E at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, is set for 09:51:30 GMT during a 4-and-a-half-minute launch window. The spacecraft's final polar orbit will be 705-kiliometres.

Picture a tree in the forest. The tree "inhales" carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, transforming that greenhouse gas into the building materials and energy it needs to grow its branches and leaves.
By removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the tree serves as an indispensable "sink," or warehouse, for carbon that, in tandem with Earth's other trees, plants and the ocean, helps reduce rising levels of carbon dioxide in the air that contribute to global warming.

NASA will hold a media briefing on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. EST to discuss the upcoming Orbiting Carbon Observatory mission, the first NASA spacecraft dedicated to studying carbon dioxide. The televised briefing will take place in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E St. S.W., Washington.
Set for launch Feb. 23 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the experimental Orbiting Carbon Observatory will map the global distribution of carbon dioxide, the leading human-produced greenhouse gas driving changes in Earth's climate.

International journalists planning to attend the launch of NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory, or OCO, at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California should apply now for accreditation.
For the OCO mission, the deadline is Friday, Jan. 23, to allow time for processing the requests.
The launch of OCO aboard an Orbital Sciences Taurus XL rocket is scheduled for 1:53 a.m. PST on Feb. 23.

The US space agency is set to launch a satellite that can map in detail where carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere.
Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will pinpoint the key locations on the Earth's surface where CO2 is being emitted and absorbed.
CO2 from human activities is thought to be driving climate changes, but important facts about its movement through the atmosphere remain elusive.
The agency believes the technology on OCO can end some of the mysteries.

NASA space probe to track CO2 on Earth
The occasionally acrimonious debate about the planet's climate has been missing a key component: accurate measurements of how much carbon dioxide is in the air and how it is being recycled by Earth.

Orbital Ships NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory Satellite to Launch Site at Vandenberg Air Force Base
Orbital Sciences Corporation, one of the world's leading space technology companies, announced today that it has shipped the Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) satellite to its launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB), California. On Saturday, November 8, the OCO satellite departed from the company's Dulles, Virginia facilities in a specialised shipping container after completing its design, development, manufacturing and testing process. The spacecraft is due to arrive at VAFB on Tuesday, November 11 for integration and full system testing with Orbital's Taurus(R) rocket that will launch the OCO satellite into low-Earth orbit (LEO) in early 2009.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory is an incredible new tool in the global effort to understand climate change that will fill in the gaps left by ground measuring stations in parts of North America, Europe and Asia.
The new satellite mission dovetails with a newly-announced plan by Virgin Galactic and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to measure carbon dioxide concentrations in the upper stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere with Virgin's high altitude carrier aircraft, White Knight Two, and its spacefaring companion, SpaceShipTwo.
