Mayan pyramid bulldozed by Belize construction crew

Officials in Belize say a construction company has destroyed one of the country's largest Mayan pyramids.
Head of the Belizean Institute of Archaeology Jaime Awe said the Noh Mul temple was levelled by a road-building company seeking gravel for road filler.

The University of Cincinnat's mastery of ancient Maya mysteries continues with new research from professor of biological sciences David Lentz.
UC faculty have been involved in multiple research projects concerning ancient Maya culture for more than a decade. This latest Maya study from Lentz focuses on Cerén, a farming village that was smothered under several meters of volcanic ash in the late sixth century.

The collapse of Classic Maya civilisation linked to drought

The Classic Maya culture thrived in rainy times and then collapsed in turmoil as the weather turned to drought, according to new research.
An international project including Durham University and led by researchers from Pennsylvania State University, USA, and ETH Zurich, Switzerland, has created a precisely-dated record of rainfall from cave deposits in the Classic Maya region, and compared it to a 'war index' of hostile events recorded on stone monuments. The research has enabled the team to create a unique historical timeline linking climate and culture in unprecedented detail.

'Oldest Mayan tomb' found in Guatemala's Retalhuleu

One of the oldest Mayan tombs ever found has been uncovered in western Guatemala, say archaeologists.
Located at a temple site in Retalhuleu province, the grave is thought to be that of an ancient ruler or religious leader who lived some 2,000 years ago.

  Mayan art and calendar at Xultun stun archaeologists

Archaeologists working at the Xultun ruins of the Mayan civilisation have reported striking finds, including the oldest-known Mayan astronomical tables.
The site, in Guatemala, includes the first known instance of Mayan art painted on the walls of a dwelling.
A report in Science says it dates from the early 9th Century, pre-dating other Mayan calendars by centuries.

 Arqueólogos del INAH lograron introducir una microcámara hasta un sepulcro, donde se descubrieron muros con sus aplanados originales y nueve personajes delineados en negro, entre otros hallazgos.

Como lo hiciera hace más de una década el equipo de arqueólogos encabezado por Merle Greene, fallecida recientemente, del Instituto de Investigación de Arte Precolombino, arqueólogos del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH-Conaculta) obtuvieron imágenes recientes de esa cámara mortuoria a la que nadie ha podido acceder desde hace mil 500 años.

Video camera reveals secrets of ancient Mayan tomb

The inside of a Mayan tomb thought to be 1,500 years old has been filmed by archaeologists for the first time.
Using a tiny video camera, the researchers were able to capture images of the burial chamber in Palenque in south-eastern Mexico.
As the device was lowered 5m down into the tomb, they saw red paint and black figures emblazoned on its walls.
The scientists say the images will shed new light on the Mayan civilisation.
