Late next month Earth will receive a new celestial visitor named Lulin or Comet C/2007 N3 - which astronomers say may have never visited this corner of the solar system before and should be visible to the naked eye.
Comets are icy clumps of dust and small rocks left over from the beginnings of the solar system. As they near the Sun some of the outer layer of ice is vaporised, releasing gas and solid debris that fans out into a tail pointing directly away from the Sun.
Astronomer and author Gary Kronk, based in St Jacob, Illinois, estimates that by 24 February, Lulin's gas tail should appear as long as around eight times the diameter of a full Moon. At that time it will be a mere 38 million miles from Earth, almost as close as Mars reaches to our planet.

A fresh new face has moved into our neighbourhood, but once it swings by Earth next month, it may never come back.
Comet Lulin is currently sailing through the inner solar system and is getting closer to our home planet, with its nearest approach expected in late February.

The comet is currently in the constellation Libra.
On the 24th February the comet will pass close to Saturn.

Lulin comet is already visible before dawn between the constellations Scorpio and Libra and can be sighted in the East to South-East morning sky with telescopes.
Comet Lulin, with two tails, is said to be a visual phenomenon when it cuts across Earths orbital plane in late February.
Amateur astronomers claim to have spotted the comet through their mid-sized telescopes despite its being faint at the moment.

There's a new comet on the way, and this one could get quite interesting! This comet's name is Comet Lulin, more formally known as Comet C/2007 N3. This potential naked eye comet could be a very interesting one since it follows an unusual orbit. Comet Lulin is actually moving in the opposite direction of the planets! It also occupies a very low-inclination orbit of about 1.6° from the ecliptic. On top of all this, the comet is in a parabolic trajectory, which means it may have never interacted with the planets and that this may be its first trip into the inner Solar system.

Stargazers are in for a treat next month as Comet Lulin is moving closer to Earth and will be visible to the naked eye. The comet is swinging around the Sun and approaching the Earth. The photogenic Lulin has a bright tail and an "anti-tail". At its closest approach in February, Comet Lulin is expected to brighten to naked-eye visibility, reaching a magnitude of six.

A short video on how to observe Comet Lulin over the next few months. Observation point is Phoenix, AZ but you can use this info as a general guide as to where to look to see the comet. Used Starry Night Pro for the star maps and created the video in Final Cut Express. This is a faint comet - so binoculars or a telescope may be needed. Could be a naked-eye comet in late February.
