Every 5.6 years, EE Cephei is eclipsed by an unseen companion.
The eclipse of the 10.9-magnitude long period eclipsing binary in the constellation Cepheus lasts 17 days. The long period variability of B5 star EE Cephei was first identified by the Italian astronomer Romano in 1956. The star system is unusual in that the period between minima is unusually long (2049.53 days), and that that previous eclipses have shown great variability in brightness; and the light curve is not smooth, indicating the binary companion may nonspherical or surrounded by a dusty torus.
The previous three eclipses have been observed in 1992, 1999 and 2003. The next eclipse of EE Cephei will occur around the 9th January 2009. The system will be well placed in the evening sky. EE Cephei is located 1.5° southwest from the 4.2-magnitude Epsilon () Cephei.
