A powerful earthquake of 7.6 magnitude has rocked the north-western part of Costa Rica, the US Geological Survey said. A tsunami warning is in effect for Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua. The quake was centred about 80km south of the town of Liberia and was at a depth of 12.4 miles. Read more

A strong earthquake has struck Costa Rica, the US Geological Survey has said. It says the magnitude 6.2 tremor was centred some 35km north-west of the capital San Jose at a depth of 28km. Reports say the quake - which hit at 13:21 local time (19:21 GMT) - cut off electricity in parts of the capital.
