A new perfection found in diamonds created by an asteroid in Siberian crater 35 million years ago

New research indicates special qualities which makes these diamonds unique in the world, according to a new announcement by scientists in Novosibirsk.

Why The 'Trillions Of Carats' Of Diamonds Found In Russia Will NOT Change The Price Of Jewellery

National Jeweller has been able to get in contact with Alrosa, the Russian mining giant, who confirmed that the huge diamond deposit really does exist. Unfortunately, the diamonds are not jewellery quality, a spokesperson for Alrosa said, and while they could feasibly be used for industrial purposes, they are located in an area without good infrastructure and it would not prove cost efficient to mine for them when low-grade, industrial-use diamonds can be made in labs more cheaply.

Why Is a Russian Crater Teeming with Diamonds?

The way in which the diamonds are formed affects their properties, such as their size, hardness, and the levels of impurities. The Associated Press says that Russia's new trove is full of diamonds that are chock full of impurities. This makes them a poor candidate for jewellers, but great for industrial or scientific uses where the diamond's hardness is valued over its shine.

Diamonds at Popigai Astroblem in eastern Siberia 'twice as hard' as normal

Russia is about to start tapping into a huge source of diamonds that could supply the world market for the next 3,000 years.
Scientists estimate there are 'trillions of carats' lying beneath a 35million-year-old asteroid crater in Siberia - more than ten times the global stockpile.
The Kremlin has known about the reserves under the 62-mile-wide impact zone since the 1970s.

The Popigai crater in Siberia, Russia is tied with Manicouagan Reservoir as the 4th largest verified impact crater on Earth. A large bolide impact created the 100-kilometer diameter crater 35.7 ± 0.2  million years ago during the late Eocene (Priabonian stage). The crater is just north of the Siberian city Norilsk.
