NASA on crusade to debunk 2012 apocalypse myths
The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, the US space agency insisted Monday in a rare campaign to dispel widespread rumours fuelled by the Internet and a new Hollywood movie.
The latest big screen offering from Sony Picture, "2012," arrives in theatres on Friday, with a 200-million-dollar production about the end of the world supposedly based on myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

Ignore the movie: 2012 will not be the end of world, say Mayans
When the disaster blockbuster 2012 opens in cinemas on Friday, film-goers will be treated to an apocalyptic epic that cost more than $200 million to make.

Sony Pictures has capitalised on all the attention on 2012 with controversial viral marketing campaign for the film based around a website for the fictional Institute for Human Continuity that lists doomsday prospects for the Earth.
The US space agency Nasa has condemned the website after receiving hundreds of inquiries from people who believed it was genuine - including some from teenagers who said they were contemplating suicide because they did not want to experience the end of the world.

Dáchten, want wat weinig 2012-profeten weten, is dat de GMT-correlatie de afgelopen tien jaar hevig onder vuur is komen te liggen door modern onderzoek van astronomen, archeologen en een enkele hobbyende wiskundige. De genadeklap was volgens velen het proefschrift waarop aardwetenschapper Andreas Fuls drie jaar geleden promoveerde aan de Technische Universiteit Berlijn. Fuls wees erop dat de GMT-correlatie helemaal niet strookt met een bewaard gebleven Mayatabel waarop de standen van Venus staan genoteerd. En zo is er meer, zoals inscripties en voorwerpen die in de tijd van Goodman, Martínez en Thompson nog niet waren ontdekt of gedateerd. Door dat allemaal op te tellen, komt Fuls uit op een heel andere datering: eentje die 208 jaar is verschoven. Het einde van de lange telling is volgens die correlatie pas over twee eeuwen, op 21, 22 of 23 december 2220. "Het is de enige mogelijkheid", zegt Fuls als je hem ernaar vraagt.

There is a lot of hysteria on the Internet these days that the ancient Mayan calendar, which ends in 2012, portends the end of the world through a variety of possible astronomical events: rogue comets, supernovae, or even supposed "energy" from the galactic center. The reality is that the Mayans simply tracked astronomical cycles. They were not psychic.
This preoccupation with doomsday has inspired science fiction tales depicting the end of Earth, including a recent TV miniseries Impact, and the upcoming motion picture 2012 that is described as "an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors."

End of the World in 2012

Yesterday I wrote about how Caltech planet-hunter Mike Brown was disturbed by a variation of the "World Will End in 2012" hoax perpetrated by a big media company's movie promotion that leaves some people genuinely worried.
This hoax has been floating around in various forms for years now, but it's reached critical mass lately (and one can only hope that means an apex, too).

Just as "Y2K" and its batch of predictions about the year 2000 have become a distant memory, here comes "Twenty-twelve."
Fuelled by a crop of books, Web sites with countdown clocks, and claims about ancient timekeepers, interest is growing in what some see as the dawn of a new era, and others as an expiration date for Earth: December 21, 2012.
The date marks the end of a 5,126-year cycle on the Long Count calendar developed by the Maya, the ancient civilization known for its advanced understanding of astronomy and for the great cities it left behind in Mexico and Central America.

(Some scholars believe the cycle ends a bit later -- on December 23, 2012.)
