The region's hot mineral springs covered with a black clay layer rich in iridium (an extra terrestrial chemical element from a meteor) and a legacy of the Cretaceous - Tertiary extinction event, which is said to have killed the dinosaurs, has also provided scientists with a scientific explanation of the fall of a gigantic asteroid on earth some 60 million years ago.
