2009's first penumbral eclipse to take place today The first penumbral eclipse of 2009 will take place today. A penumbral eclipse will take place today, with the moon entering the outer part of the Earth's shadow. The eclipse will reach its greatest extent at 4:38 p.m. (EET), so Turks will not have the chance to observe this point in the eclipse as the moon will not have yet risen.
I thought the Sun is currently in constellation of Capricorn and the full moon in Leo...so would that not be Capricorn/Leo instead of Aquarius/Leo in regards to the moon nodes? thanks! I am just learning a little about astronomy, newbie.
The first lunar eclipse of the year will occur on February 9. The eclipse is visible from India. People in Eastern Europe, Asia, Australia, Pacific, Western parts of North America can also witness the eclipse. The penumbras lunar eclipse begins at 6.08 pm IST and ends at 10.08 pm.
A penumbral lunar eclipse will take place on February 9, 2009, the first of four penumbral lunar eclipses in 2009. It will also be the deepest of the four. The eclipse will not be visible in the East coast of the United States, South America and southernmost Mexico, Western Africa and western Europe. Best visibility will be over most of Asia, the Western US, Mexico and throughout the Pacific region.
A lunar eclipse happens near the transiting moon nodes - now in Aquarius/Leo - when the Earth lines up with the Sun and the Moon, the Earth casts its shadow onto the Moon.
