Japan has shut down its primary space centre - including a control room for part of the International Space Station - after the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the country today (March 11).
JAXA, Japan's space agency, evacuated its Tsukuba Space Centre in Tsukuba, Japan,  followings the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and tsunami that subsequently devastated the country.

Since the triumphant return of the Hayabusa Asteroid Probe to Earth in June after its fantastic seven-year space voyage, I feel that the Tsukuba Space Centre (TKSC) has become more familiar to me.
The research institute in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, is run by the government-affiliated Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
