As seen from Umatilla, Oregon, this is a series of both still and video of the moon passing in front of the planet Venus this morning (4-22-2009). All pictures and video by Tony George, Astronomy Instructor, Columbia Basin College
A somewhat rare astronomical event which will not re-occur for another twenty years. The next one will occur on Oct. 11, 2029. The crescent moon drifts in its orbit towards Venus, and slowly covers up the planet, which is 17% lit at this time. These events are called occultations, and the sight was quite beautiful, despite a few obscuring clouds.
