The five-pound meteorite that crashed into a Park Forest home in 2003 was bought by a private collector for $50,787.50 Sunday during an auction by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.
The Garza Stone, a 5-pound piece of a meteorite that famously crashed through the roof of a house in Park Forest, Ill., in 2003, is expected to fetch more than $55,000.
The 5-pound piece of meteorite, dubbed the "Garza" stone after Noe Garza, whose Park Forest home was struck by the rock, is believed by scientists to have originated as a 10-ton meteorite that hit the atmosphere and broke up before striking the Garza home on the evening of March 26, 2003
