Makeover for India's biggest telescope to improve clarity

The Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) near Pune has been upgraded with new front-end and back-end systems, components and advanced electronics increasing its sensitivity by three times. It also received round-the-clock power supply. The upgraded telescope was thrown open to the researchers on Sunday by Govind Swarup, the grand old man of Indian astronomy.

India's Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT)



The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope [GMRT] is an array of 30 Radio Telescopes, located close to the Indian city of Pune -- also known, alternately, as the Oxford & Detroit of the East. It is the largest such array of telescopes in the world & is considered as one of the most pioneering centres in the field of Radio Astronomy.
It is operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, a part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

This week, when two trustees of the Grote Reber Foundation visit the world's largest meter wavelength radio telescope - the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT), located at Narayangaon in the district - they will bring with them a unique gift - the ashes of Grote Reber, the world's first radio astronomer.

GMRT consists of 30 fully steerable gigantic parabolic dishes of 45m diameter each spread over distances of up to 25 km.

Eighty kilometres from Pune city in Khodad village in Junnar taluka, the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT), one of the world's few low radio frequency telescopes used in studying the universe, is getting an upgrade.
The facility, which attracts talent from across the world and India, has been the research base for leading astronomers over the years. The upgrade would make GMRT more attractive for astronomers to come to Khodad to pursue cutting edge research.
