Comet C/2009 Q5 (McNaught) was discovered by Rob McNaught (Siding Spring Survey) on the 31st August, 2009. This discovery takes the total tally of cometary discoveries by Rob McNaught to 50.

The preliminary orbital elements of the comet indicate a perihelion passage on the  11th March, 2010, at a distance of 1.55 AU from the Sun, where the  comet could then reach  magnitude 13.
