Comet C/2009 R1 (McNaught), at magnitude 6.3, will pass 4.39° from the magnitude 5.7 galaxy M33 at 19:00 UT, 31st May, 2010. The Comet is currently just below the star Beta Andromeda.
Comet C/2009 R1 (McNaught) was discovered by Rob H. McNaught (Siding Spring Survey) on the 9th September, 2009. This discovery brings up Rob McNaughts total cometary discoveries to 51. The preliminary orbital elements of the comet indicate a perihelion passage on the 2nd July, 2010 at a distance of 0.40 AU from the Sun, when it could reach a magnitude 4.5.
