Surveyor 1 was launched May 30, 1966, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and it landed on the Moon on June 2, 1966.

Surveyor 1 lands on the Moon. (1966)

Surveyor 1 was the first lunar lander in the American  Surveyor program that explored the Moon. The successful soft landing on the 2nd June, 1966, in the Ocean of Storms was the first ever by the U.S. on an extraterrestrial body, and came just four months after the landing of the Soviet Luna 9 mission.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera has imaged the landing site of Surveyor 1 lander near to Flamsteed Ring, a 100 kilometre-wide buried crater.

Surveyor 1 - America's first soft lunar landing
Surveyor 1 was the first in a series of seven US missions to the Moon that preceded Apollo; five of the seven missions were successful. Surveyor 1 was launched on May 30, 1966, and landed on June 2, 1966. The mission's objectives were to soft land on the Moon and to collect information on the lunar regolith.
