Look up at the stars and ask yourself: What scares me more? To be alone in the universe, or to know that there's someone else up there?
It's an age-old question, as valid for you and me as it was for Giordano Bruno when he wrote about an "infinity of worlds" before being burnt at the stake in 1600.
But 50 years ago last month, a letter to the magazine Nature ended the passive, look-up-and-ponder attitude by proposing a scientific, experimental approach. We don't have an answer yet (or you and I would know), but in the process we have come up with quite a tale to tell.

New Drake equation to quantify habitability?
Astrobiologists are trying to work out a mathematical equation to quantify how suitable other planets are for life, similar to the famous Drake Equation for judging the chances of contacting extraterrestrial civilizations.
The exercise could help future generations figure out where to look for aliens - or where to settle down. But coming up with a new "habitability index" isn't just a matter of arithmetic.

"At present, there is no easy way of directly comparing the suitability of different environments as a habitat for life. The classical definition of a habitable environment is one that has the presence of a solvent, for example water, availability of the raw materials for life, clement conditions and some kind of energy source, so we tend to define a place as habitable if it falls into the area where these criteria overlap on a Venn diagram. This is fine for specific instances, but it gives us no quantifiable way of comparing exactly how habitable one environment is in comparison with another, which I think is very important" - Dr. Axel Hagermann.

Hagermann and colleague Charles ****ell have the ambitious aim of developing a single, normalised indicator of habitability, mathematically describing all the variables of each of the four habitability criteria. Initially, they are focusing on describing all the qualities of an energy source that may help or hinder the development of life.

Seth Shostak, author of "Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence," will present this year's "Science Fact Meets Science Fiction" lecture on Sept. 29 at ASU.

Astronomers estimate there are 70 sextillion stars in the visible universe. That's a 7 followed by 22 zeros. Searching that inconceivably vast expanse for what would be the most sensational, and potentially disruptive discovery in the history of humankind is just another day at the office for Seth Shostak.

SETI telescope array produces first science results
The only telescope array in the world that is focused on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has produced its first scientific results - but unfortunately there's still no word from ET.
Astronomers hope to continue adding telescopes to the system to search for alien transmissions, but in the meantime, they are also surveying intergalactic space for 'missing' star-forming gas and other astronomical phenomena.

Things have changed since the original Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock set off to seek out new life and new civilizations. Back in the 1960s, while the Enterprise crew was exploring a galaxy full of exotic life-forms, real astronomers were stuck in a solar system with eight desolate-looking neighbours and no signs of any planets beyond.
Now, finally, astronomers are starting to zero in on Earth-like worlds orbiting other stars. Some of the more recent finds even look potentially habitable.
