On Saturday 21st November 2009 at 10.50pm, with a barometric pressure of 1030 millibars, & a clear sky with no clouds, the night sky was lit up with a white blinding light stretching across the eastern portion of the sky, midway between the centre (directly above where I stood) & the horizon.

Probe underway into Gauteng meteor sighting

"We understand that the meteor passed over Gauteng and some bits might have landed in Limpopo, but we have not been able to get the physical evidence as yet"  - Naledi Pandor, Science and Technology Minister.

While reports are that it was a meteorite that hit anywhere from Bela Bela to Zimbabwe, more and more Jacaranda 94.2 listeners are convinced it actually crash landed in Botswana.

Amateur astronomists across Gauteng said on Monday they were focussing their search for an alleged meteorite, which allegedly plummeted to earth on Saturday night, in the North West.

If the meteor did survive entry, Limpopo seems a likely candidate for a crash site. Amateur astronomer and spokesman for the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (Assa), Sharon Tait, says she received at least 10 reported sightings from Limpopo.

Meteorologists are investigating an apparent meteor which lit up the night sky. The 5 second flash was apparently seen in different provinces including Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng at eleven at night.

Johannesburg and Pretoria residents have come forward, claiming they spotted a meteor in the skies on Saturday night.
People in Gauteng saw the bright light at around 11pm on Saturday night, heading towards the north of Pretoria.

Gauteng  is a province of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal province after South Africa's first all-race elections on 27 April 1994.
