Georgia Tech Team Wins Key Insights - and a Second-Place Finish - in DARPA Network Challenge
A national competition aimed at quickly locating 10 red weather balloons tethered at locations across the United States has netted a second-place finish for a Georgia Tech team - along with a set of new insights into the use of social networks for gathering information. Sponsored by the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the DARPA Network Challenge attracted hundreds of teams to tackle the problem of how to locate the balloons, which were positioned Dec. 5 at locations ranging from San Francisco and Portland to Memphis and Miami. The US defence research agency has launched 10 red balloons in a contest to assess the accuracy with which information spreads on the internet. The giant moored weather balloons were launched on Saturday morning at 10 undisclosed locations across the United States. More than 4,000 groups have registered to take part in the challenge. DARPA ANNOUNCES NEW CHALLENGE COMPETITION The DARPA Network Challenge Will Explore How Broad-Scope Problems Can Be Solved Using Internet-based Technologies
The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) today announced the DARPA Network Challenge to mark the 40th anniversary of the Internet. The competition requires participants to discover the exact position of 10 large, red weather balloons that DARPA will place in undisclosed locations across the continental United States. The first person to identify the location of all the balloons will win a $40,000 cash prize. The balloons will be positioned on December 5, 2009.
