Orbital Sciences Corporation announced today that it has signed a contract with London-based Avanti Communications Group plc for a new geosynchronous (GEO) communications satellite. The spacecraft, to be named HYLAS 2, will be based on Orbitals industry-leading STARTM 2.4 satellite platform.

HYLAS 2 satellite to be launched by Arianespace

Avanti Communications Group plc has chosen Arianespace to launch its HYLAS 2 communications satellite.
The HYLAS 2 satellite will be boosted into geostationary transfer orbit in the first half of 2012 by an Ariane 5 or Soyuz launcher operating at the Guiana Space Centre, Europes Spaceport in French Guiana.
It is the second Avanti satellite to be launched by Arianespace.
