Astrium has won a 20m euro (£16m) contract to develop technology for re-ignitable engines for the European Space Agency (ESA). The two-year contract will see Astrium working on cryogenic engines (fuelled by liquid hydrogen and oxygen) for the upper stages of rocket launches. The project, entitled iCryogenic Upper Stage Technologes (CUST), will focus on fuel management under zero gravity and the thermal insulation of the cryogenic fuel tanks. Read more
Europe's largest space company, EADS Astrium, looks set to acquire the British satellite manufacturer SSTL. Surrey Satellite Technology Limited started as a spin-out from the University of Surrey in 1985. It has become the world's leading manufacturer of small satellites, producing low-cost platforms for Earth observation missions.
The European aerospace giant EADS is going into the space tourism business. Its Astrium division says it will build a space plane capable of carrying fare-paying passengers on a sub-orbital ride more than 100km above the planet. The vehicle, which will take off from a normal airport, will give the tourists a three-to-five-minute experience of weightlessness at the top of its climb.
Antrix and EADS Astrium enter communications satellite partnership Antrix and EADS Astrium have agreed to jointly address the commercial market for communications satellites with payload power below 4 Kw and a launch mass in the range of 2 to 3 tons.
Satellites in this weight range represent a sizable and stable part of the market. The aim of this cooperation is to optimise the INSAT 2K and 3K Platforms along with EADS Astrium Payloads.
In the presence of Dr G Madhavan Nair, Chairman of ISRO, K R Sridhara Murthi, Executive Director of Antrix Corporation, and Antone Bouvier, chairman of EADS Astrium signed a Memorandum of Agreement on June 17.
The Antrix EADS Astrium alliance will have all the ingredients to be successful on this market, offering mature, flexible and cost effective solution to operator's requests. ANTRIX is the commercial arm of the Indian Department of Space, the technical unit of which is the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) which has had extensive experience of designing developing and manufacturing Indian satellite systems including the INSAT and IRS series.
ISRO objective has been to develop space technology and its application to various national tasks. Since 1969, when it was set up, ISRO has established space systems like the INSAT for telecommunication, television broadcasting and meteorological services, and the Indian Remote Sensing Satellites (IRS) for resources monitoring and management.
ISRO has also developed the satellite launch vehicles PSLV and GSLV to place these satellites in the required orbits.
