Weston Observatory recorded seismic waves from quake

With world attention fixed on Haiti's devastating earthquake for a third day, staff at a local geophysical lab again fielded calls yesterday, keeping their institution in the regional spotlight.
Opened in 1930 before moving to Concord Road in the late 1940s, Boston College's Weston Observatory is a fixture in both regional and worldwide earthquake detection networks. When a magnitude-7 quake struck six miles from Haiti's capital Tuesday, the initial seismic waves reached the lab within six minutes and were recorded.

Signals from the Haiti earthquake were accidentally picked up at the University of Bristol by geophysical instrumentation normally used to monitor volcanoes.
Based in his office in the Wills Memorial Building of the Earth Sciences Department, Dr Joachim Gottsmann recorded incoming seismic waves from the earthquake. It took the waves 20 minutes or so to travel to Bristol from the earthquake's hypocentre below Haiti.

New satellite maps of Haiti coming in

As rescue workers scramble to provide assistance to hundreds of thousands of people following Haiti's earthquake, Earth observation satellite data continues to provide updated views of the situation on the ground.

First satellite map of Haiti earthquake

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on 12 January, causing major casualties and damage. The quake was followed by several aftershocks with magnitudes over 5.0.
Such a powerful earthquake can make current maps suddenly out of date, causing additional challenges to rescue workers on the ground. Earth observation satellite images can help rescue efforts by providing updated views of how the landscape and the infrastructure have been affected.

As many as 100,000 people are feared dead after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti yesterday.

"This quake was magnitude 7, equivalent to the energy release of about half a megaton of TNT. Earthquakes of this size can cause relatively slight damage in well-designed and constructed buildings, but considerable destruction in poor ones. The last major earthquake in this part of Haiti was 1860; in 1692, a major earthquake in Jamaica caused 2000 deaths" - Prof Roger Searle, Earth Sciences Department at Durham University.
