Astrophysicist Proved Elements Are Created by Stars
In one of the most sweeping discoveries of astrophysics, Geoffrey Burbidge helped explain the origins of the elements. Mr. Burbidge, a University of California at San Diego cosmologist who died Tuesday at age 84, helped show how chemical elements are created by stars. Geoffrey Burbidge, a renowned British astrophysicist and astronomer at the UCSD who made contributions to our understanding of how elements are formed in stars as well as modern cosmology and radio galaxies, died on Jan. 26 at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla after a long illness. Geoffrey Ronald Burbidge (born September 24, 1925; died January 25, 2010) was a English physics professor in the University of California, San Diego. He was married to Margaret Burbidge. He received his PhD from London in 1951.
