Scientists study 'peanut-shaped' asteroid near Earth

A mile-long asteroid that raced past Earth July 25 at about 45,000 miles per hour - at a safe distance of 4.5 million miles - was imaged by radar telescopes so that astronomers like Cornell's Sean Marshall could discern its precise orbit and physical shape.

The 1000 - 2300 metre wide asteroid (85989) 1999 JD6 will make a close pass (18.8 LD, 0.0484 AU) travelling at 20.32 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 25th July 2015 @ 04:55 UT ±00:01.

The 1100 - 2400 metre wide asteroid 1999 JD6 will make a close pass (53.9 lunar distances, 0.1386 AU), travelling at 16.87 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 27th July, 2010 @ 06:56 UT.
