Scientists from both Colorado University and Colorado State University have offered to examine the rock in the Hebbert's front yard. They say it's really the only way to confirm it is a meteorite. Meteorites are very rare. Only one or two are found each year in Colorado. Read more
Roger Hebbert got more than a cake for his 75th birthday this morning; he awoke to find what he believes is a meteorite that struck just 10 feet from his rural Rist Canyon home. Hebbert's wife, Bonnie, said she heard a loud swooshing sound late Monday night and felt a gust of wind through the house, but she didn't think too much of it because the log-sided home the couple shares is heated by three different sources, including a woodstove. Right in front of their home, about 15 feet from their front door, Roger found a rock a little smaller than a basketball. The yard that had been covered with 10 inches of snow was melted bare a couple of feet in all directions of the rock. Roger thought it could be a meteorite, but initially had a hard time convincing Bonnie. Read more
