UNESCO has 'serious concern' over Great Barrier Reef coral

A United Nations agency said Saturday it had "serious concern" about coral bleaching on Australia's Great Barrier and urged the government to work faster to improve water quality in the region.
UNESCO said in a draft report to the World Heritage Committee released in Paris on the state of conservation of World Heritage-listed properties that "climate change remains the most significant overall threat to the future" of the 2,300-kilometer coral expanse.

Extreme heat is pushing parts of the Great Barrier Reef beyond recovery

Professor Terry Hughes of James Cook University and colleagues analysed the impact of three major bleachings in the past two decades on Australia's reef.
The research confirmed last year's event, which also affected reefs in places like Japan and parts of the Caribbean, was the worst on record.

NASA Begins Study of Australia's Great Barrier Reef

A NASA airborne mission designed to transform our understanding of Earth's valuable and ecologically sensitive coral reefs has set up shop in Australia for a two-month investigation of the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef ecosystem.
At a media briefing today at Cairns Airport in North Queensland, Australia, scientists from NASA's COral Reef Airborne Laboratory (CORAL) mission and their Australian collaborators discussed the mission's objectives and the new insights they expect to glean into the present condition of the Great Barrier Reef and the function of reef systems worldwide.

On 11 June 1770, the HM Bark Endeavour, captained by explorer James Cook, ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef, sustaining considerable damage. Lightening the ship and re-floating it during an incoming tide eventually saved it

A high-tech underwater robot has discovered diverse coral reefs living in the deep waters, inaccessible to humans, along Australia's Great Barrier Reef, say biologists.
An international team, led by James Cook University, says the findings were a first for this depth of the Reef.

Australian maritime authorities are preparing to remove tonnes of heavy fuel oil from a Chinese ship which is stranded on the Great Barrier Reef.
A floating boom has been put around the Shen Neng 1 to contain oil which has already leaked from its damaged hull.

A Chinese ship is in danger of breaking up after running aground off north-east Australia, sparking fears of a major oil spill into the Great Barrier Reef.
The Shen Neng 1, carrying 950 tonnes of oil, ran aground 70km off the east coast of Great Keppel Island.
