On March 1, 2009, one local resident received a visit from out outer space - sort of. Though no little green men or unidentified flying objects were spotted, the 294-gram meteorite that crashed through the ceiling of a Cartersville home certainly left an impression. The meteorite has recently been loaned to Tellus Science Museum where it is on display along with part of the roof, an attic rafter, and part of the ceiling, all of which were struck by the meteorite on its decent to its final resting place in one of the homes bedrooms. The meteorite arrived in loud fashion on March 8, 2009 with a sound a neighbour described as a sonic boom. It then tore a hole in the roof of a home in Cartersville, Georgia, before crashing through the ceiling and ending its cosmic journey on a bedroom floor. The house was unoccupied at the time. A 4.6 billion year old meteorite that travelled millions of miles through space before blowing through an attic in Northwest Georgia was unveiled by staff at the Tellus Science Museum this morning. Experts estimate the the half-pound, peach sized space rock was traveling between 50,000 and 70,000 miles per hour when it entered the atmosphere on March 1, 2009. Read more
