Space shuttle Atlantis and six astronauts ended a 12-day journey of more than 4.8 million miles with an 8:48 a.m. EDT landing Wednesday at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
The third of five shuttle missions planned for 2010, this was the last scheduled flight for Atlantis. The mission, designated STS-132, delivered the Russian-built Mini Research Module-1 to the International Space Station. Also known as Rassvet ("dawn" in Russian), the module provides additional storage space and a new docking port for Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Lands For The Last Time

Space shuttle Atlantis returned from orbit for the last time Wednesday, closing out a 25-year flying career and safely bringing back six astronauts who boosted the International Space Station's power and size.
The smooth landing was indicative of the entire 12-day mission - NASA's third-to-last shuttle flight.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its six-member crew are expected to return to Earth on Wednesday, May 26, after a 12-day mission. NASA managers will evaluate weather conditions at the agency's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida before permitting Atlantis to land.
Wednesday landing opportunities at Kennedy are at 8:48 a.m. and 10:22 a.m. EDT (12:48 and 14:22 GMT). If Atlantis is unable to land Wednesday, additional opportunities are available at Kennedy on Thursday at 9:13 a.m. and 10:48 a.m. There are opportunities Friday at Kennedy and backup landing site Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

The shuttle undocked at 11:22 a.m. Sunday after a week parked at the orbiting outpost.

Astronauts on the shuttle Atlantis's latest, and probably, last mission to the space station make their first spacewalk on Monday.
Mission specialists Garrett Reisman and Steve Bowen will venture outside the platform for about 6.5 hours to install an antenna and a robot tool tray.
