Joburg's geology museum began with a gem collection in 1890; it has since grown to 17 000 fascinating items, on display again at a new museum. The old geology museum closed in 1997, and the collection has had no curator since then. A new curator will be appointed in the coming months. A recent audit revealed that there were 17 000 items in the collection, which was started when Dr David Draper donated his gem collection to the city in 1890. The museum was founded by the Wi****ersrand Chamber of Mines in the same year, just four years after the discovery of gold in 1886. Read more
