Austrian village seeks UNESCO protection for its starry skies
Daytime visitors to Grossmugl might wonder why this plain Austrian village is seeking to become a UNESCO world heritage site. But the question is quickly answered at sunset, when the village's grain silo and church tower blend into the darkness and some 5,000 stars lit up the night sky. The people of Grossmugl want their stars to be protected. They live just half an hour's drive away from Vienna, where the city's bright lights make all but 40 stars invisible.
