Aberdeen City Council is boldly going to pursue beaming up ideas to mark the city's apparent links with Star Trek character Scotty.

Aberdeen is one of the places to have laid claim to being the birthplace of the late James Doohan's character.
It has now been decided to investigate "low and no cost" options.
This includes assessing the benefits and drawbacks of bars and clubs developing a range of Star Trek-related drinks to boost tourism.
The plan has gone before the city council's economic development sub-committee, which has decided to pursue further investigation.
Head of economic development Rita Stephen said that several towns in Scotland had claimed to be Scotty's official birthplace, but noted an episode in which the character described himself as "an old Aberdeen pub crawler".
Officials will now look into the options and report back to councillors.

Doohan died of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia in July last year, aged 85.
The Canadian-born actor had been a successful character actor on radio and TV before landing the role in the pilot Star Trek episode.
Last year, West Lothian Council said it planned to erect a plaque in his memory in Linlithgow.
Scripts of the sci-fi series were said to show that his character was born in Linlithgow in 2222 and that his parents still lived there

The Explorers Flight will be launched on board a Falcon 1 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, US.

Currently Space Services Inc. project that the Explorers Flight will launch no earlier than May 2006. While earlier projected to occur during the first quarter of this year, their launch must await the Falcon 1's maiden flight, now projected to take place between March 20 and 25 from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
The Explorers Flight will fly on the second launch of the Falcon 1. On February 27.
SpaceX -- the company building the Falcon 1 -- "expects the second launch of Falcon 1 to take place from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California about three to four months after the maiden launch."

The planned launch sometime in March of the Falcon one rocket carrying the ashes of actor James Doohan, who played chief engineer Montgomery Scott on Star Trek, and Mercury program astronaut Gordon Cooper will give a fitting send-off to two men who helped popularise human space exploration.

The craft also will hold the ashes of 185 others, including a telephone technician, a nurse and a college student.
Their families paid $995 to $5,300 for the flight, being conducted by one of a handful of growing businesses hoping to give a space experience to the common folk.

"It broadens the market, which is important to us because our whole business plan is about getting more people access to space. Space needs to be affordable for all in some way" - Harvin Moore of Space Services Inc. of Houston, which is sponsoring the ashes flight.

Along with these services, space tourism businesses hope to send customers into suborbital space at a cost of $25,000 to $250,000 a person, far less than the $20 million businessman Gregory Olsen paid Russia last fall for a ride to the International Space Station. Richard Branson's company, Virgin Galactic, already has 100 people who have paid $200,000 apiece for flights, which the company has said it hopes to begin in 2008.

You still live on in our hearts.

James 'Scotty' Doohan's remains will be launched into space in accord with his last wishes.
Commercial space flight operator Space Services Inc. will launch the late actor's remains into space aboard its Explorers Flight on December 6.
Onboard will be the remains of 150 others including an unidentified astronaut and Mareta West, the astrogeologist who determined the site for the first spacecraft landing on the moon.

People can post tributes to Doohan at the Space Services Web site. Those messages will be digitized, packed with 'Scotty' and blasted into space.

The Explorers Flight will be the largest ever memorial spaceflight.
The Explorers Flight is the sixth mission conducted by the Celestis/SSI team.

The launch schedule cannot be finalized until a US Air Force Titan 4 launch vehicle lifts off from Vandenberg Air Force Base carrying a large, classified National Reconnaissance Office spacecraft.

The SpaceX Falcon 1 launch pad (Space Launch Complex-3) at Vandenberg is just north of the Titan 4 pad. The Falcon’s southern trajectory includes a close over flight of the Titan complex where the massive vehicle stands assembled for flight, hence the Air Force’s requirement that the Falcon launch occur only after the Titan launch. The risk of damage to the Titan complex is small, but real, in the event of a Falcon launch failure.
The primary spacecraft for the Falcon 1 launch is TacSat-1, a small imaging satellite built by the Naval Research Laboratory.
