Translucent Ice in North Polar Region (PSP_009696_2575) Some of the ice has a polygonal texture which probably formed when temperature variations created stress and cracks in the ice.	Saltating Gypsum into Dark Polar Dunes (PSP_009656_2780) Scientists propose that gypsum deposits formed as a result of melting or retreating ice sheets in a polar evaporate basal unit.	Double Impact Crater (PSP_009619_1630) How is it possible to say that the double crater is due to a binary asteroid, instead of two independent impacts?
Eroded Sediments in West Candor Chasma (PSP_009460_1745) This image shows a steep-sided depression in light-toned, layered rocks in the Valles Marineris canyon system.	Stratigraphy Exposed in Ius Chasma (PSP_007430_1725) Only where erosion and expansion have exposed enough stratigraphy can we see the whole geologic history of this region.

Valleys Near Ganges Chasma (PSP_009578_1715) Several valleys as well as light-toned material are visible in this HiRISE image of a portion of Allegheny Vallis along the plains west of Ganges Chasma.	Enigmatic Terrain in Hellas Basin (PSP_009548_1420) A variety of unusual landforms occur on the floor of the basin due to the low elevation.	Merging Lobate Debris Aprons of Deuteronilus Mensae (PSP_009535_2240) Deuteronilus Mensae is characterised by hills and mesas surrounded by broad debris aprons and this HiRISE image shows examples where lobate-shaped debris aprons appear to overlap.
Unnamed, Well-Preserved Crater South of Hypanis Valles (PSP_009393_1890) Because the features on the crater rim, walls, and floor are very sharp, rather than rounded, it appears to have undergone very little erosion or other modification since its formation.	Unconformity in North Polar Layered Deposits (PSP_009390_2595) The most noticeable part of the polar cap is visible in an unconformity, the horizontal break in the cap layers.

Dusty Volcano in Syria Planum (PSP_009527_1670) The basic shape of the old volcano is visible here, but the entire region has been coated by dust.	Dark Spot Near Olmpus Mons Volcano (PSP_009502_1980) This image covers a relatively dark-toned patch of ground west of the Olympus Mons volcano. This spot is one of several dark areas in this region of Mars.	Tube-Fed Lava Flow Field (PSP_009501_1755) Shield volcanoes are often covered by a combination of open lava channels and partly enclosed lava tubes, through which lava once flowed when the volcano was active.
Outcrops in Aurorae Chaos (PSP_009498_1730) These outcrops could indicate deposition of sediments on the floor of the chaos after it formed, but the process itself is not certain.	Clusters of Mounds at Acidalia Planitia (PSP_009485_2185) There are several hypothesis to explain the origin of these Martian mounds; all of them require the presence of fluids near or at the surface.	Water Bearing Minerals in Noctis Labyrinthus (PSP_009474_1705) Noctis Labyrinthus consists of a series of pits on the western end of the large Valles Marineris canyon system.

NASA`s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has returned dozens of stunning images of the planet`s surface covered in ice.
Seasonal frosts, sand, clays and high winds help create an eyecatching landscape.
The images are among thousands taken, but they cover less than four-fifths of one per cent of the area of the planet.

Images taken by a space probe 200 miles above the surface of Mars have revealed a polar landscape dominated by icy dunes. The dunes were carved by winds but it remains unclear how long the process took and to what extent it is still taking place.
The images were taken by Nasas High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and are the most revealing yet of part of the north polar landscape. The white in the pictures shows ice that recedes in the northern hemispheres summer.
