Thousands in Guatemala facing evacuation as Pacaya volcano erupts

A volcano has erupted in Guatemala, prompting the authorities to consider the evacuation of some 3,000 people living in the area.
The Pacaya volcano began spewing ash and lava after a powerful explosion on Saturday afternoon.
New explosions were seen on Sunday, with ash clouds reaching a height or at least 4km.

Hundreds of Guatemalans have been forced to flee their homes, amid an eruption by one of the country's most active volcanoes.
Pacaya began spewing lava, rocks and debris on Thursday, leaving one person dead and three children missing.
At least 1,600 people have fled the eruption, some 30km south of the capital city.

Authorities closed Guatemala's international airport on Thursday after the nearby Pacaya volcano showered as much as 8 centimetres of ash over parts of the city.
La Aurora airport would be closed at least until Friday noon, and possibly longer, said Angel Perez, a spokesman for the Central American country's Civil Aeronautics Office.
