A geomagnetic storm K-Index of 6 is expected Currently a solar wind stream flowing from a solar coronal hole may reach the Earth on the 3rd September, 2009.
Astronomers have captured what they claim is the rare sight of a "stealth storm" that erupted from the Sun even though its surface looked tranquil. A team at George Mason University caught the sight of the blurp of ionised gas that blasted into space from surface of the Sun without warning, using images taken by the STEREO twin solar probes. According to the astronomers, the eruption was a coronal mass ejection -- a bubble of plasma that, if energetic enough and pointed at Earth, can well zap satellites, endanger astronauts, and knock out power grids.
Unless you live in the Canada's Far North, viewing the Aurora Borealis-the Northern Lights-can be a hit-and-miss activity at best. However, researchers from the University of Alberta have designed a website for aurora watchers, science buffs and the public that will help determine the best viewing periods for the celestial light show.
