A volcano in southwestern Japan erupted Sunday after nearly two weeks of relative silence, sending ash and rocks up to four kilometres into the air, a local official says.
It was not immediately clear if the eruption was a direct result of the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked northern areas Friday, unleashing a fierce tsunami and sparking fears that more than 10,000 may have been killed.

The eruption of Shinmoedake Volcano in southern Japan, the first in 52 years, is reportedly disrupting flights in the region. Cathay Pacific Airways announced today, February 2, that its flights to and from Nagoya, Tokyo and Osaka would be hindered by delays.

Japanese volcano Shinmoedake shatters windows 8km away

A volcano on Kyushu in Japan has erupted again with its biggest explosion yet, shattering windows 8 kilometres away.
Shinmoedake first showed signs of new life last Wednesday, since when fine ash clouds have been raining down on the area.

Erupting Kyushu volcano's outbursts get more serious

A 1,421-meter-high volcano on the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures erupted Tuesday for the fourth time since Jan. 26, spewing ash to a height of about 2,000 meters.
Mount Shinmoe in the Kirishima range erupted at around 7:54 a.m., prompting the Meteorological Agency to extend the danger zone for rocks hurled from the crater to a radius of 4 km from 2 km.
