Court bid to kick squatters out of historic city house
Action has been taken to try to remove squatters from one of Derby's most historic buildings, despite them saying they had repaired it. The former clockworks in Queen Street was home to John Flamsteed, John Whitehurst and Joseph Wright and was visited by Benjamin Franklin before becoming Smith and Sons' headquarters for 150 years. 27, Queen Street was built by Stephen Flamsteed, father of famous astronomer John Flamsteed, in the 1600s. John, the first Astronomer Royal, who catalogued 3,000 stars, inherited it in 1688 and stayed there when in Derby. In 1764 John Whitehurst, a founder member of the Lunar Society and friend of famous artist Joseph Wright got John Pickford to rebuild it to make it more modern. Read more
