Four small tsunami hit coastal areas of Hokkaido and Iwate Prefecture on Wednesday night, following a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 near the Russian-controlled Etorofu Island off Hokkaido, the Meteorological Agency announced. A 40-centimeter high tsunami hit Nemuro on the east coast of Hokkaido at 9:29 p.m., while at 9:55 p.m. a 20-centimeter tsunami hit Kushiro, also in Hokkaido. Another 40-centimeter tsunami hit Tokachi Port in Hiroocho at 10:06 p.m. and a 20-centimeter tsunami was observed at Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, at 10:11 p.m., according to the agency.

Small tsunami waves have hit northern Japan, according to the country's meteorological agency (JMA). It said a 40cm wave hit Nemuro port in Hokkaido island. Another one of 20cm was recorded. The JMA initially expected a tsunami of at least two metres high after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Kuril Islands, north of Japan.
