Amateur-built rocket launches off the Mull of Galloway 1st September, 2011
The Mull of Galloway has been the backdrop for an attempt to set a new UK height record for an amateur-built rocket. The 4m-long missile was built by sixth-form students from two schools in Lancashire working with professionals from Bolton Science and Technology Centre. After a slight delay, it was launched shortly after 10:00 with the hope of reaching 17.5km high - twice the height of Everest. Only once the rocket is recovered will it be known if the record has been broken.
