Rediscovered Hula painted frog 'is a living fossil'

A species of frog that was recently rediscovered after being declared extinct has been reclassified as a "living fossil".
Israel's Hula painted frog had not been seen for nearly 60 years, but in 2011 one was found lurking in a patch of swampy undergrowth.
Tests have revealed that the frog belongs to a group of amphibians that died out 15,000 years ago.

A frog species believed to be extinct has hopped back into sight in northern Israel.

Omri Gal of Israel's Nature and Parks Authority said Thursday the Hula Painted Frog was seen for the first time in 50 years this week. He said it was declared extinct.

The deliberate draining of Lake Hula and its marshes in the 1950s was thought to lead to the extinction of this frog, along with the cyprinid fish Acanthobrama hulensis and cichlid fish Tristramella intermedia.
