A large violent earthquake occurred on the early hours (6 h 22 m or so) of 14 July 1885 damaging many areas of Bengal (presently within Bangladesh) with epicenter somewhere close to 24.0 N (Lat) 90.1 E (Long). The earthquake was sensibly felt througout an area of about 230,400 sq miles covering Chotonagpur, Bihar, Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam, Manipur and Burma. The earthquake was felt with considerable violence in Calcutta, Sitarampur, Monghyr, Purnea (Diocese Church damaged) Siliguri and Garo hills.
