On 8 and 9 January, in the historic town of Edinburgh, ESA and BNSC are to hold a workshop to kick off the first in a series of consultations with key stakeholders. The aim is to define European long-term strategy for space exploration and set the scene for the decisions to be taken at the ESA Council meeting at ministerial level scheduled for 2008.
ESA has been working on the Aurora programme as a framework for space exploration for several years, and aims to make space exploration a global and societal project. It would be global insofar as it would rally, in a coordinated manner, as many nations as possible behind space exploration goals and objectives whose value and benefits would be there for the whole of humankind. It would be societal in that the European drivers and priorities would be defined following consultation with, and the commitment of, four stakeholder communities: scientific; political and institutional; industrial and innovation-related; and the general public and youth.

The European Space Agency (Esa) has pushed back the launch of its rover mission to Mars from 2011 to 2013.
The decision will not significantly delay the mission's arrival at Mars.
But it does reflect a growing will to push for an upgrade to the ExoMars project which could raise its cost from roughly 500m euros to 800m euros.
It would involve launching the rover on an Ariane 5 rocket instead of a Russian Soyuz, releasing enough mass to send an orbiting spacecraft along for the ride.

Net users who cannot get down to the Farnborough International Airshow this week can see the event instead through the eyes of Europe's Mars rover.

The ExoMars vehicle, due to be launched to the Red Planet in 2011, is currently going through its design phases.
The six-wheeled testbed chassis, dubbed Bridget, is on show at Farnborough to demonstrate how the vehicle would navigate rocky Martian terrain.
Bridget has been rigged with a webcam so surfers can follow her progress.

The webcam can supposedly be view here (if you can find it).

Across a volcanic landscape, a prototype British-made machine, "Bridget", takes the first steps of what could eventually lead to a 40 million-mile journey through space.

The golf cart-sized vehicle grinds forward at a more than leisurely 0.1mph - the equivalent of the small step it has managed since it emerged from a white Transit van - but which may one day herald a giant leap for mankind.

The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) has today announced an investment of £1.7 million in R&D to enable UK scientists and engineers to develop key instrumentation and technologies for the European Space Agency's (ESA) ExoMars mission. ExoMars, the first mission in ESA's Aurora programme of planetary exploration and slated for launch in 2011, will explore the Red Planet with a suite of sophisticated instruments and seek clues to the existence of past or present life.

ExoMars will explore the Martian surface with a mobile rover and a stationary science module.

Media Invite: Aurora - UK Prepares for Return to Mars
To be held on 12th June 2006
at the Royal College of Pathologists, Carlton House Terrace, London
(Registration from 10.00am - Press Conference starts at 10.30am)

In December 2005, the UK committed itself to a return to Mars with the European Space Agency's Aurora programme. The first mission in this exciting programme of exploration 'ExoMars' is slated for launch in 2011. ExoMars will consist of a lander and a rover, and builds on the technology developed for Beagle 2 and Huygens, and the scientific and technological success of its mothership Mars Express.

Press conference speakers will include:

* Dr Mike Healy, EADS Astrium
* Dr Mark Sims, University of Leicester
* Prof John Zarnecki, Open University

Doors open at 10.00am and the Press Conference starts at 10.30am. Lunch will be provided.

Registration:
All attendees must register online in advance, or contact Jill Little, Tel 01793 442 012.

In the frame of a contract signed with the European Space Agency (ESA), Alcatel Alenia Space has started the ExoMars mission design. The ExoMars mission aims at sending a lander rover to Mars in order to find traces of past or present life. This contract, worth about 13 million Euros, calls for one year mission design work up to the preliminary design review including the definition of the main system elements of the mission.

ExoMars is the first robotic exploration mission to be developed within the European space exploration program Aurora. Aurora objectives are to create and implement a European long-term plan for the robotic and human exploration of the solar system as well as to search for life beyond the Earth.

The ExoMars program, commissioned by ESA for a budget of about 600 million Euros, is one of the most important exploration missions in the near future. Scheduled to be launched from Kourou in 2011, the ExoMars mission will enable exobiology studies. The mission will collect new information on Mars environment to prepare future human explorations.

In the scope of the mission design work, Alcatel Alenia Space consolidates the mission objectives, defines the system elements, as well as the Rover Operations Control System and Mission Exploitation System concept.

"We are pleased that ESA Council has decided to go ahead with the Aurora program and its first mission ExoMars. This mission, like Huygens, represents a great challenge to both the space industry and Alcatel Alenia Space, paving the way for future Mars missions" - Vincenzo Giorgio, Director for Optical Observation & Science programs from Alcatel Alenia Space in Italy.

Having a successful track record in this domain, Alcatel Alenia Space is ready to take on this challenge due to a number of complementary skills, from the ability to coordinate international alliances in long-term endeavours, to the assembly, integration and testing of scientific probes, through the proven expertise in the technologies needed for space astronomy and interplanetary missions with landings including deep space telecommunications.

The UK government is to invest 108m euros (£73.2m) to give Britain a major share in building the robotic probe for Europe's next mission to Mars.

The European Space Agency (Esa) member states approved funding for the ExoMars mission at the agency's ministerial meeting in Berlin.

The rover will explore the surface of Mars, in search of traces of life, past and present.
The mission is a key milestone in the Aurora programme, Esa's vision to send spacecraft and eventually astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

The Ministers responsible for space in the European Space Agency's 17 Member States and Canada today concluded a two-day meeting of ESA's ruling Council in Berlin by deciding on a coherent plan for discovery and competitiveness for Europe in space.
