Schiaparelli Mars probe 'ready for all eventualities'

The European Schiaparelli probe may have to contend with relatively dusty conditions when it arrives at Mars.
The spacecraft is aiming to make a dump-down on the planet's Meridiani Plain a week on Wednesday.
US researchers have suggested sand particles could soon start lifting into the atmosphere - something they do on a regular, seasonal basis.

Schiaparelli readied for Mars landing

This week, the commands that will govern the Schiaparelli lander's descent and touchdown on Mars were uploaded to ESA's ExoMars spacecraft, enroute to the Red Planet.
The Trace Gas Orbiter has been carrying the Schiaparelli entry, descent and landing demonstrator since launch on 14 March. Upon arrival on 19 October, Schiaparelli will test the technology needed for Europe's 2020 rover to land, while its parent craft brakes into an elliptical orbit around Mars.

Schiaparelli, the Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module of the joint ESA/Roscosmos ExoMars 2016 mission, will target the Meridiani Planum region for its October landing.
Schiaparelli is riding to Mars on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. The mission launched on a Proton rocket from Baikonur on 14 March, and is on course for a 19 October rendezvous with the Red Planet.

ExoMars 2016 targets March launch window

A problem recently discovered in two sensors in the propulsion system of the entry, descent and landing demonstrator module has prompted the recommendation to move the launch of the ExoMars 2016 mission, initially foreseen in January, to March, still within the launch window of early 2016.

Four possible landing sites are being considered for the ExoMars mission in 2018. Its rover will search for evidence of martian life, past or present.
ExoMars is a joint two-mission endeavour between ESA and Russias Roscosmos space agency. The Trace Gas Orbiter and an entry, descent and landing demonstrator module, Schiaparelli, will be launched in January 2016, arriving at Mars nine months later. The Rover and Surface Platform will depart in May 2018, with touchdown on Mars in January 2019.

Stockholm Astrobiology Declaration to the national representatives in the Council of ESA

The European Astrobiology community has gathered during their annual assembly in Stockholm October 15-17, 2012.

The ExoMars Programme is the first ESA mission addressing Astrobiology, the quest for habitability and life on other planets, a topic of profound scientific and public interest. It is the logic follow-up action of ESA's successful Mars Express mission, which has enabled an indepth revisiting of Martian history and, in particular, of the role played by water in the most ancient times. Specifically, the mission demonstrated that Mars once harboured environmental conditions of potential habitability. These key discoveries paved the way for further Mars exploration. With ExoMars the next steps towards the discovery of life beyond Earth will be within reach.
