A great fireball was seen by people all over the UK and Ireland tonight, here is some footage taken by my meteor camera based in Bangor, Northern Ireland. The camera is pointing almost straight up but slightly dipped towards the Belfast direction in the West. There are 5 main chunks of debris, each one was over mag -5 as it entered the frame.
People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the night sky, thought to be meteors or "space junk" Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east. The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia. Read more
"It was visible for at least 30 seconds or so , as I witnessed it in Castleford, west Yorkshire. My immediate thoughts were that it was space debris re entry, and not meteor of origin, as it lasted too long, and displayed far too much colour, (bright green, yellow and orange). Tonight just before 11pm a very bright light appeared in the north west skies, which then appeared to break up and create several intense streaks of light. We were lucky enough to see it, thinking it was something breaking up towards Harwarden airport. However speaking with the police they confirm they have had several reports and it was just a Meteor. Police in the North East have been inundated with calls after what is believed to be a meteor streaked across the country. Forces across the UK received reports of bright lights racing across the sky in formation, some glowing orange and some green. Read more
Leeds residents have caught a glimpse of a meteorite burning up above the UK. Thousands of people across the country witnessed chunks of rock hurtling through the sky at around 11pm and West Yorkshire was no different. Read more
