Ed ~ The basically all plastic construction makes for a lightweight pair of binoculars. Unfortunately that (and the price) is about the best thing that can be said about it. The plastic focusing mechanism is quite easily broken and the optics appalling. There is no clarity or sharpness to the optics (ie. Stars will appear as fuzzy blobs). The ruby coating hides the chromatic aberrations but gives a very dark blue-tinted image. As a toy the large size and fragility makes it unsuitable for children.
