According to a Moscow meteorologist a record low atmospheric pressure of 727.7 mm of mercury was registered in the Russian capital on Tuesday.

"Atmospheric pressure dropped below a record low at 3 a.m. Moscow time (11 p.m. GMT Monday), and hit 727.7 mm Hg at 9 a.m. (5 a.m. GMT). The previous record low of 731.2 mm Hg was registered in 1936" - Spokesperson for the regional metrological centre.

Russia is experiencing in its coldest winter temperatures in 26 years.
On Thursday temperatures in Moscow plunging overnight to minus 30 Celsius.
Forecasters are predicting temperatures in the Russian capital to fall to minus 34 Celsius on Friday, with even colder temperatures in rural areas around the city.

"The present cold is unique by its duration, which will either be a record or be close to a record" - Roman Vilfand, chief meteorologist .

This year is the coldest since the winter of 1978-1979, when temperatures dropped to minus 38 degrees Celsius. According to meteorologists it is possible that the 1940 Moscow record of minus 42.1 degrees Celsius could be broken.
