A security vulnerability in the Beta 2 Preview release of Internet Explorer 7has been found The bug lies in the urlmon.dll file and causes the browser to crash when it encounters a URL with the "file://" protocol followed by a long string of dashes.
Microsoft has just made available their latest beta preview build of their Internet Explorer 7.0 web browser.
"Evaluation of Internet Explorer 7 should start now, but the software should not be used on production systems in mission-critical environments. Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview will only run on Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) systems, but will ultimately be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003."
There are two ways to access System Restore through Help and Support or through your All Programs folder. Through Help and Support: 1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support. 2. Under Pick a Task, click Undo changes to your computer with System Restore. 3. Follow the instructions on the wizard.
Through the All Programs menu: 1. Click Start. 2. Point to All Programs. 3. Point to Accessories. 4. Point to System Tools. 5. Click System Restore. 6. Follow the instructions on the wizard.
NOTE: If you're running a valid XP version, don`t patch it. Once you installed the Beta 2 IE 7 When you restart the computer on the bottom right beside the system tray it may say:
"Windows XP Professional For Testing Purposes Only. Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 (Service Pack 2)."
Note: This will not go away when you revert back or uninstal IE7.
If you DO want to remove the text that has appeared at the bottom of your desktop after you installed IE7:
Patching Instructions for those Not running a Genuine Copy of Windows XP:
1) Download the patched iecustom.dll iecustom.rar ( 68.32k )
2) Using a program like WinRAR, extract the contents of IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe to a random temporary directory 3) Open up the new temp dir and browse to the "update" folder 4) Replace iecustom.dll with our Patched version 5) Now, run update.exe, NOT iesetup.exe
You can use a Windows XP Keygen to generate a Product Key with a xxx PID, which will validate. And remember to import the .cer file first.
How to Change your Windows Product Key to a "Valid" one with a key generator (Obviouslly you only need to do this if you're running an illegal copy of XP)
1) Go to Start, Run, type regedit 2) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents 3) In the right-hand pane, double click on the value "OOBETimer" 4) Change one of these characters to another random character (it really doesn't matter which, the idea is to corrupt the key so that we un-activate our copy of Windows) and press OK 5) Run the Keygen, select "Windows XP Pro VLK" from the drop-down, and change both the "From" and "To" digits to 700 6) Go to Start, Run, and type C:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a, obviouslly replace C: with the drive letter that Windows is installed to. 7) Select the option to activate by phone, and press Next 8) Click the button at the bottom labelled "Change Product Key" 9) Enter the new product key that the keygen created, and click Update 10) When the key is updated, do not continue with the activation process, close the activation window!
Right, now, Press the Windows Key and the Pause Key together, and look for your PID (the long number in the middle of the dialog) if it is like this... xxxxx-700-xxxxxxx-xxxxx, then you can go ahead and run the IE setup! If not, you will need to restart your computer. (Make sure that you've imported the .cer file first)!
