NGC 1679 (also GC 916, ESO 422-1, MCG -5-12-4, UGCA 96, AM 0448-320, IRAS 04480-3203 and PGC 16120) is a magnitude +11.3 barred spiral galaxy located 49 million light years away in the constellation Caelum.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town on the 18th November 1835.
It can be observed with a 180mm aperture telescope as an irregular patch, that shows a trace of spiral structure.
