NGC 493 (also UGC 914, PGC 4979, MCG +00-04-099, IRAS 01195 +0041, 2MASX J01220898 +0056432) is a magnitude +12.2 edge-on barred spiral galaxy located 81 - 90 million light years away in the constellation Cetus.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 20th December 1786.
